Healthy Eating
We teach children to eat with joy, respect, and a desire to explore
At our Sluníčková školička preschool, we believe that a healthy and balanced diet is one of the pillars of a happy and harmonious childhood. Good eating habits are formed at an early age, which is why we strive to guide children to view food not only as a necessity, but also as a joy, an experience, and a way to care for their bodies and minds.
Every day, we prepare fresh, varied, and nutritionally balanced meals for the children. Our meals are designed according to the principles of healthy nutrition for preschoolers and align with the recommendations of child nutrition experts. We use fresh, high-quality, and local ingredients, often sourced from regional suppliers. We place great emphasis on seasonal ingredients—our menus feature dishes made from fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, and lean meats. Sweets are a rare treat here—we prefer homemade snacks made from whole-grain flour, oatmeal, and fruit.
We teach children to experience food with all their senses
Healthy eating isn't just about the composition of the menu, but also about the approach to food itself. That's why at Unicorn School, we guide children to experience food with all their senses, discover new flavors, aromas, and colors, and learn that every meal is a small discovery.
The program also includes preparing snacks together—children make simple dishes on their own, such as fruit salads, spreads, or open-faced sandwiches with fresh vegetables. Through this, they build a relationship with food, develop fine motor skills, and learn independence, responsibility, and cooperation.
Our School Garden—Food from Seed to Plate
One of the children's favorite activities is growing their own vegetables and herbs in the school garden. The children love watching a seed grow into a plant that we'll later use in soup or a spread. This process fosters an ecological mindset, patience, and respect for nature. In this way, the children gain firsthand experience with where food comes from, how to care for it, and why it's important to appreciate every bite.
Our garden is not only a place for learning and physical activity but also a small classroom for a healthy lifestyle. It teaches children that quality food begins with healthy soil, water, light, and care—just like the relationships we build at our preschool.
Shared Meals and Table Manners
Mealtime at Unicorn School also has an educational and social dimension. The children eat together with their teachers, who serve as kind role models. We learn table manners—how to hold cutlery, how to ask for more and say thank you, and how to listen to one another and respect others. Eating together isn't just about food, but about sharing, communication, and fostering interpersonal relationships.
Children learn to wait until everyone has been served, to thank the cook, and to appreciate that someone prepared the meal with care. In such an atmosphere, an ordinary lunch becomes an opportunity to develop kindness, gratitude, and thoughtfulness—values we consider just as important as the vitamins in the soup.
Food as Part of Education and the Joy of Life
At Unicorn School, a private preschool, we strive to create an environment where food is a natural part of teaching respect, cooperation, and a healthy lifestyle. Our goal is not just to feed the children, but to teach them to understand the bigger picture—why we eat what we eat, how food affects our bodies, moods, and behavior, and why it's important to think about where our food comes from.
Here, children experience food as a joy and a social event that connects the worlds of home, preschool, and nature. And when they bend down in the garden to pick a tomato they planted themselves, they know that healthy eating isn't just a "program," but a natural part of their everyday lives.
